Default Alternator

I was told today I need a new alternator. No problem but I want to make sure that I am not going to get ripped off. Taking it to Honda to have it fixed. How long does it take to put in and is 500 dollars a fair quote.

Did the dealers say you need an alternator? Do you want to replace it your self and save? Are you good with tool? Yes 350-500 is normal and it will take about 1 to 2 hours.

it takes around 15 minutes, but you have to wait for your number. i'd go to any local mechanic shop and have them do it. @ honda u're paying more for the labor then the part itself.

That is outrageous! I have always taken my cars to Schucks, NAPA, or Advance Auto Parts and had them test the alternator. They will do it for free. If the alternator is bad they will take the bad one and you can then buy a new one. Another option is having the bad one rebuilt but that takes to much time for me.

I am sure the mechanics explained to you that the alternator recharges the battery when you drive at speeds of 2000RPM or higher. If you constantly do travel short distances and low RPM then your not allowing your alternator recharge the battery (one of the functions of the alternator).

If you are handy with tools and like to know maintenance on your car, do it yourself.

I would never go to a dealer for almost anything. If you are at all technically inclined you can do it yourself in about an hour.

But if you must go somewhere, go to a third party mechanic, will prob be cheaper.
