That is outrageous! I have always taken my cars to Schucks, NAPA, or Advance Auto Parts and had them test the alternator. They will do it for free. If the alternator is bad they will take the bad one and you can then buy a new one. Another option is having the bad one rebuilt but that takes to much time for me.

I am sure the mechanics explained to you that the alternator recharges the battery when you drive at speeds of 2000RPM or higher. If you constantly do travel short distances and low RPM then your not allowing your alternator recharge the battery (one of the functions of the alternator).

If you are handy with tools and like to know maintenance on your car, do it yourself.
