the problem is the 3rd gear syncro. there is/was a bullitain

Thanks for the advice. I have had no luck with the dealer or tsb's. I think the one you're referring to is for 2004 and earlier. Honda claims to have made a fix to the 5 and 6 gears that affects the other gears in 2005 and newer MT's.

However you were right about the syncro - i found this at:

"In the end one of the techs finally felt the problem, and had to go into the transmission. Turns out it was the 3rd gear syncro. He said it was "too tight" and there was a lot of scoring on it. So he replaced the syncro and whatever is attached to it. One month later there are no signs of the shifting problem anymore.
Interestingly, I told the service manager that I had heard of several other people that had had this problem. He "looked it up" in Honda's system and said he couldn't find any info on the problem. My guess is because there are so few of these cars (6MTs) out there."

I tried the reformulated Honda MTF and it fixed any clunkiness in my transmission. When I change the MTF next spring I may try the GM stuff.
