Default Honda Brake Pads vs. others.......

Hello all,

I have a 02 Accord EX and I just recently changed all 4 brakes for the first time.

I used the Autozone brake pads and the brake grease (which says synthetic on the package) for the shims on the front (I have no shims on the back).

Here is my problem. After installing, the front brakes have a "rubbing" sound when I slowly release the breaks. Also, all four of the breaks squeal about 80% of the time. When its really quite outside and I roll the windows down and brake, I can literally hear the brakes pressing up against the rotors while driving at 5 mph.

I took my car up to the Honda dealership for the free brake inspection and lied, and said some Honda/Acura shop changed my brakes. After they inspected it, they said that the workmanship was fine but I needed Honda pads.

I guess my question is, should I get honda pads? Should I keep my autozone pads and maybe get rid of the synthetic grease? I don’t know what to do. Please let me know if you can help. Sorry this is so long.

autozone brand is metallic brake pads i believe. they are the cheapest one and made with the cheapest most basic material. they will squeal regardless. you should have gone with HONDA OEM or with ceramic pads.

metallic pads ALWAYS squeal. shell out those extra 20 dollars and get the results you desire next time.

I've been using Autozone lifetime pads on many cars for years. Usually the squeak is from between the shim and back of the pad. If you get some of the CRC or CFC (can't remember the name) orange glue liquid stuff (anti squeal) and put it between the shim and the pad, that should work for you. Although some of the replacement pad have the shims attached to the pad, so that wouldn't work for you.
I do agree that OEM ones are better and if you buy the whole set it comes with shims. I did use them for a while because I needed new shims anyway.
If you just brake as you normally would and don't try to induce the squeal going 5MPH, the Autozone ones should be fine until you have to replace them again.
Three thoughts though:
Did you break in the pads correctly (bed them) by doing a few 30MPH to OMPH stops?
Did you remove the glaze from the rotor with a sandpaper before installing the pads?
Are all of your little pads clips nice clean and tight fitting?

Thanks for all comments. To answer m735is, I didnt do any of those things. I didnt break them in because I didnt know you had to do that. I also didnt know you had to use sandpaper on the rotors. The dealership said I installed them just fine.

I guess I need to buy the ceramic and not metallic pads. Also, I used the anti-squel that autozone carries but it was the more expensive $1.99 pack called synthetic anti-squeal. You may have seen it, its in a red and blue packet. I think I'll stay away from that and just go with the .99 stuff.

Also, I only have shims on the front with the anti-squeal stuff and they "rub" when I slowly release the brake.

You don't have to use sandpaper on the rotors, in fact I rarely do that. Only if the rotors have a real shiney "glaze" to them. I just cut the glaze down alitttle with a light swirling of the sandpaper.
