its funny you say that. Yesterday I installed an XM radio for my father in law and no matter where the antenna was it sounded better when mounted inside the car.
Really?
That is odd, but results are results!
The antenna is looking for signal strength. By theory, mounting it outside gives it a 360 radius. By mounting it inside, you give up coverage, but don't have to ruin your car with drills, glue, tape, or wiring.
Here's some shots I just made ... (green = signal radius)
exterior, top of car
interior, front mounted
interior, rear mounted
Technically, if you're going to do the interior mount, the front dash is the way to go. The front windshield has a wider slope allowing more of a signal radius vs the rear.
From my experience, the rear mount was pefectly fine. The ONLY time I lost signal was driving under a tunnel. That's it.
we ran to trunk 2 weeks ago & it works great. But for fun, I'm gonna try the antenna inside the car as well & see how that works. Would like to get it off my trunk if possible. Forget the roof as Sirus suggests, I'm not peeling back my rear window moulding. That said, I love the numerous Rock & sports stations on Sirius.... wow!
I'm not a fan of the exterior mounts at all. Like I said, the signal gain / loss is so minimal when doing an interior glass mount.
yep,....the only negative I have with interior mounting as im sure you may experienece with an exterior mount is when driving through the forest.
The loss of reception is the only problem I have but, I can deal with it.
