would it be cheaper to buy a new/rebuilt/used tranny than to rebuild mine? i have an auto btw, could i swap it out for a different one?

i would check the junkyards in the area.... you might find one for cheap

i would probably go reman check out coleman taylor's website i just put one in a odyssey from there u will have to swap over some things hard lines,range switch,dip stick tube and some brackets it came with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty for i think 2200

I would recommend a reman. transmission if you plan on keeping the car for awhile. If not, it would be a tough call between the rebuilt or used transmission, mainly decided upon by the quality of the rebuilder.
