94 'cord squeeling at startup..

94 'cord squeeling at startup..

The belt that runs my altenator (sp?) is squeeling, can someone give me a quick run through of how to tighten it up?

loosen the 2 bolt holding the alt the is a 10mm you turn to tighten the belt.the 10mm is on top bolting two on of the hold down bolts for the alt.

If it still squeels try some belt dressing.

Get a new belt. Sometimes with age & heat they get hard & slippery. Especially if belt dressing works - that's a temporary fix.

If you over-tighten the belt to get it to stop squealing, you'll be asking about noisy alternator bearings next...

It is a new belt as of about a month ago, i think it just diddent get on tight enought... is there a good way to tell how tight belts are supposed to be?

Belt tension gauge. But I don't have one. I go by feel, and try to err on the loose side (so not to hurt the bearings). If it squeals, I tighten up a little bit.
