am i getting ripped off?
three years ago changing my brakes scared me half to death. Now its a piece of cake. Just last week changing out my struts scared me half to death. Now its a semi-piece of cake. Just get someone that knows shit about cars to help you, pay for his lunch everytime he comes over, and learn. It saves hundreds in the long run.
hey everyone. thanks a bunch for all of your feedback. i really appreciate it. here's the whole story:
took the car in last thursday. honda guy tells me that "if it were his car" he would replace all rotors and brakepads, and the total cost would be $880. i said, what's the minimum i would need to do pass inspection. he says, maybe they could save some of the rotors, total cost would be around $600.
i posted this thread, talked to some friends, and made a few phone calls. i decided to have the honda dealer go ahead with the small stuff (even though tranny fluid and balancing were high), but NOT to touch the brakes.
TOTAL for small stuff = $184
Interesting note: turns out it passed inspection without any brake work. curious. very curious :-)
SO, i pick up my car and on friday, take it to a local shop that i trust 100%. Local shop replaces two rotors, saves the other two, and replaces brakes all the way around:
TOTAL for local shop work = $260
TOTAL savings = $440 !!!!
Thanks again for all your help, and those of you who thought that the total for all the stuff listed above (including the small stuff) should be less than $400....you were right on the money.
