Default 94 accord Transmission probs!!! help

I have a 94 accord ex 4 cyc auto with 230k miles.
When i drive the car there is a "stall" in the car between gears and does not shift smoothly..feels like a person learning to drive stick. It kicks the hardest when going from 1st to 2nd gear. There is a kick going from 2nd to 3rd but not as bad as 1st to 2nd. Before it kicks, there is a "knocking" sound that i hear. I dont' think it's from the engine, but not sure. The hard shifts are more severe when i drive slowly. What is and how do i fix this problem?? Please help this has been goin on for a while...

I was thinking it's the torque converter, but i'm not sure.
If it is the torque converter, where can i buy one and does anyone know how much is one for a 94 accord.
Does anyone know the procedure or where i can get the procedure of replacing a torque converter?

Would flushing out the transmission fluid help?? or is it waste of money?
Where can I buy a transmission filter?
Is changing the transmission filter a hard job or is it possible to do it yourself??
Can someone also tell me the procedure for chaning the trans. filter too, or where i can get the procedure??

Have you kept up with the transmission flushes? I have a 94 Accord EX (165K miles), that I purchased about a month ago. I took it to my mechanic to have all the routine mx brought up to date. As part of that, he said I definately needed a transmission flush.....and stated that it is very important since they "have NO transmission filter." Basically you change the transmission fluid to remove any particles that have found their way into the transmission. If there are particles in your transmission partially blocking passages, and/or redirecting transmission fluid, it could definately change the shift characteristics.

If I were you, I would talk to a mechanic (that you trust) and get their opinion. The flush should only cost around $150.00, and if that doesn't fix it, you haven't lost anything because it needs to be done anyway. From there you can go to the more expensive items....converter etc.

Oh yeah, be sure they put the right fluid back in....I THINK (not positive) the 94 uses a Dexron II fluid, and the later versions use a Dexron III.

Hope this helps.

I think you're describing hard shifting ?!?!?

Pull out the trans dipstick and smell the fluid... if it smells burned, your trans is cooked... DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE TO IT EVER... including changing the fluid.

If the fluid smells like fresh trans fluid it's probably just a worn clutch. Most people just drive it gently and live with it (though yours gets worse driving gently ?!?!?!). Reman trannys run about $2G from Honda.

Use ONLY Honda brand ATF in your trans. Many minor drivability issues clear up with Honda fluid... I think there may even be a TSB for your vintage car on that point.

with 230k, what can you expect? thats pretty damn good for tranny life. lets see ford or chevy do that. but thats basically normal to have a rough shift at that kinda mileage. all you can do is live with it or get a new tranny. though i found if you use lucas oil tranny treatment that does help it a bit.

There is a filter for the auto. tranny. Unfortunately, you have to dismantle the tranny. for replacement.

A trans. fluid flush is a good way to kill an old and weaker tranny.

Don't flush. Drain, refill.

just drain and refill do not flush big mistake at 200+ miles and a flush you will knock something loose and the tranny will be worse off
