97 Ex Problem
OK in all 17 years of my driving I've never done this... I was driving down the freeway when I saw another accord come up next to me and revved up. so I downshifted into 3rd and went with him. when I went into 4th my coffee mug knocked my elbow as I was shifting and made go into second. To make the matter worse I let go of the clutch... I quickly corrected the problem but it seems the damage was done. The tach went to 8k and when I got home I noticed a bad knocking sound in the range of 1700 and 3000 rpms right under the valve cover. Is it my cam bearings or a rod? Can anyone help me? This is my DD and I need to fix it if its simple then I want to do it myself. Any help would be great. Thanks

Use a hose or other type of long tube held to your ear to isolate where the noise is coming from on the top OR side of the cylinder head. Once you found the cylinder it's loudest at, pull that plug wire. If the knock goes away over the "dead miss" sound of the misfiring cylinder, you know you have a rod (maybe main) bearing issue. If the noise presists, and sounds like it's still coming from the top side of the cylinder head, then it's most like valvetrain problem.
If you were shifting out of 3rd at top rev's(6k+), chances are your indicated 8k on your tach was more like 9-11k. The F22 is a stoudt engine, but depending on your miles, you may have damaged something in the valvetrain. If you have an few hours and the noise is coming from the head and not the bottom end, I'd pull the valve cover and check around the problem cylinder on the intake side for excessive lash.
This is all based on my experiance with Honda engines! Take everything I've said with a grain of salt. Please report back here with what you find and I'll do my best to help you out further. I wish I could see it in person to give you a better idea but lets start with the basics.
