Default Girl Friend is buyin my turbo!

Okay, so my car is almost done being sleeved, and build (expected to be returned to me by sept. 14 or before) And im spending a lot more then expected on the build, new exhaust, labor, a various small things. So instead of me spend most of my money (i still have a little bit of funds left) my girl friend told me she would pay for the most expensive part that i still have to buy. So i told her that was going to be the turbo, and she agreed to buying it for me!!!! I already have a small turbo that i was going to use before my build, but i decieded half way threw buying all my turbo components that im just going to do it right in the first place and get as much streetable hp i can get. So i have a few choices in turbos that im looking at. They're all BB turbos, and made by garrett. Im looking at one of the following: GT3071R, GT3076R, or a GT3082R. Im pretty sure im not going to go with the GT3071R because it would be too small (the most efficent whp would be in the 300's and im looking for something higher). Im sure the 3076 would spool up 375 whp, but im not sure if it would reach the 400whp that im looking for. But the problem with the 3082 (aka the GT30/GT40) is that im not sure if it will be a streetable turbo.

what engine? how much boost? what size dp back?

im running a turbonetics t3/t4 60mm on my y8, it all depends on what kind of numbers you looking for and what rpm you generally drive arround,

for example a t25 ( stock eclipse turbo) will begin to spool arround 2000 rpm on a sohc but will reach full spool arround 4500 rpm which means that after 4500 rpms you will not gain any more hp

the 60 trim i have on my car starts to spool arround 3200 rpm but will make much more hp per lb of boost, and has a much better powerband for my application

rule of thumd is 12 to 15 hp per lb of boost

Losiglow LOL. Yeah i actually think imma ask her to marry me this friday (has nothing to do with the turbo, purely coinsidental)

t3t4delsol. My engine is a f23, i plan on running 20-30psi of boost and im going with a full 3" exhaust and 3" downpipe. Im not sure what kind of rpm range im going to have after my car is built (new valve train/ titanium retainers) and im pretty sure its going to be over 7200 rpms, but if its in the 8000 range ill probably go with the 3076 with the 1.06 housing.

Edit: Ive talked to a few people and all of them say that Garrett under-rates their turbos. People have seen over 440whp on the GT3071R's, but i still dont know if i want to go with that just yet.

8000rpm range is going to be tough. The F-series lacks the oil lubrication system found in the sump of the H-series block.

Plus the main caps are just not as beefy as the H-series. The piston head speed is going to be an issue. I think I recall sometime back a guy out in AZ was building long stroke H-series motors for Accords.

I think his post sig was 2point6. He even scaled back for a time to 2.4l strokes on his H-blocks.

The Accord F23 isn't really 2.3l, it's a lot closer to 2250cc but Honda took the liberty of rounding up for the marketing. If you want higher RPM's a smaller crank stroke would likely be advisable. As is, the larger displacement should allow for a better spool anyhow so you shouldn't need the rpm's for power.

Sizing the turbo is the more important criteria. I've never been a fan of the T3/04 hybrid turbo for the Honda applications-it's far too peaky. The Saab's of similiar displacement like the performance Viggen used a turbo more inline with a straight T3, which allows for better power in the low end and mid range. This is more ideal for the conditions street cars see. Volvo's even used a T25 like turbo, which isn't very flashy but you'd be in the turbo spool range 3/4 of the time. Peak power won't be that high, but you'll be in the meat of the power band all the time.

She got me the GT3071 with a .82 a/r. I think thats the best one for my needs, and anything more then the hp it produces is really uncontrolable outside of a drag strip. I take some pictures of it when the turbo arrives.

Oh and she said yes, so we're engaged now. I did it at the cheesecake factory and everyone was clapping and cheering for us. All of her friends, and my friends were crying, even the doods. It was pretty sweet.
