If the EGR doesn't pan out, check your rear (vacuum operated) engine mount.

When that screws up, the idle gets rough when stopped IN GEAR like at a stop light. The idle speed doesn't get real low, & the engine doesn't struggle to stay running, but it vibrates more than normal.

But the engine mount won't explain the sooty exhaust...

yup... i thought of the mounts, but the carbon build up on the exhaust makes no sense with the mounts

dude you can go to autozone and buy the stuff yourself for $4 and do it in 5 minutes. Why waste money at a mechanic?

Some people are afraid to touch their cars. I know people that won't even change their own spark plugs.

On another related note, doesn't Honda have top end cleaner that comes in a spray can??

I've never seen it. I have the brake cleaner and general purose lubricant though. It's god stuff. You can buy that stuff at most Honda car dealership and any Honda motor sports dealership.

use Carb Cleaner. Buy the can of Carb Cleaner and spray it into your throttle body by having someone hold down the gas all the way while you spray twice or three times, then turn on the car
it may feel like its choking and about to turn off but dont worry it will fix itself. My brothers maxima had this problem with stalling. its a common prollem
