Does anybody know what the wear limits should be for the rear disc brake rotors on an '02 EX 4-cyl? The Haynes manual says to check for the cast markings on the rotor, but I can't find them due to corrosion from New England's fantastic salty winters. I took a micrometer to one of them and got thicknesses between .3500 and .3535 in.

My dealer told me I would probably need new brakes at just about this mileage but I don't know if they meant just pads or pads and discs. I've done every search imagineable and came up empty. Thanks!

 

I do not know the right figure but you can try to call parts store. They might know...

call the dealer and ask what the minimum thickness of the rear rotors on an 02 EX 4cylinder. they should be able to help you.

 

Rear brake spec on most flat (non-vented) rear rotors is 8mm minimum... that's .315 inch. For a car that new, you must be on your first rear brake work (about 35-40k miles.) That's pad replacement only.

(Note: Front rotors are usually resurfaced at this milage and should be replaced at the next service interval, around 80k miles.)

 

everytime we replace front pads we resurface the rotors unless they're really bad then we replace the rotor. for rear pads we just remove and replace, we cut the rear rotors very rarely though.

 

Thanks for all the responses! Sounds like there's plenty of wear left in the rotors. The car has 33K so it's definitely the first set. I will check the pads and replace accordingly, likewise on the front. The mechanic told me that the fronts only had ~20% wear on them at 29K so I'm willing to bet that they were replaced not long before I bought the car at 25K.

Again, thanks for the advice. The only thing worse than needlessly throwing money at a dealer is failing to do the maintenance at all!
