startup problems
when i start my car in the mornings and its cold i hear a winding noise for 2 seconds and it goes a way any one know what it is. also their is something that ticks and when the motor warms up it goes away i think i need a valve adjustment but im not sure someone please help me. this is on a 2000 accord 4cyl
The winding noise could be the starter getting stuck in flywheel when it starts. Try lubing the starter gear. The ticking noise usally happens when the motor is cold and the oil has not yet reached the valves. For that i suggest to check the oil and possibly change it with a sytheic type.
If you like but adjusting the vavles can't be made tight because adjusting valves is for clearance between the head and the pistons, an up and down motion. Then again it might only take the ticking noise away for a short time. It has to do with the oil!! Your call It will go away with good oil change/cycle and a good filter. Did you look into any additives?
Adjusting valves isn't exactly a bad idea, but probably unrelated to the noise. If your cousin's a master tech, he won't screw up your engine by making the valve clearances too small. The worst thing that can happen is he'll measure them & find they're just fine. Then he'll tease you for wasting his time or your money.
Have him listen to the noise. A good tech can easily tell the difference between the sound of valves (out-of-adjustment) vs. a starter that isn't disengaging. We can't actually hear it from here.
BTW; adjusting valve clearance has nothing to do with clearance between the piston & the head! (?)
