Extended Warranty on a used Honda??
I have been looking for a good used accord for a while now. I wanted a 00-01 model because of the tranny warranty.
I found a 99 Ex I4 with 44k on it.
Do you think it would be worth it to buy a extenended warrenty(HondaCare) for it? I dont want to be stuck buying a new tranny in a year. 44k miles is low for a honda.
Is there any other isues with the 99 model Accord?
thanks

Yes, honda did make ex's with cloth interior.
Leather interior is only available for 4 cyl Ex models and I believe standard on the V6-ex, optional on V6-lx and not available on 4-cyl LX models and below.
The tranny problem pretty much stems from 98-01 accord V6's. The 4cyl model doesnt have this "defect" as per Honda Care.
I purchased the extended warranty on my 02 accord and havent had a problem with my tranny. Last week my CEL came onand the codes were ref: P0700, P0740.
I reset the ECu and TCU and the problem never came back. Might of been a computer glitch or something.
I generally don't buy extended warranties on things just because the math doesn't work out on average. On most extended warranties, about 78% of your payment goes to overhead/commission. On average, companies use only 12-15% of extended warranty fees to actually cover repairs. I forget where the other 7-10% goes on average.
Of course, if you are the one guy whose transmission hits the pavement, it was worth it. It's ultimately up to you, but generally the math doesn't work out. You can usually self-insure things like that for 20 cents on the dollar.

Thanks,
I agree, usually Extended warranties are just rip-offs. But they have had a lot of tranny problems, maybe only with the v6 model.
I just dont want to be the one that has to pay $1500 for a new tranny.
Has Honda payed part of the cost on Tranny replacement if it was for a year that was not covered?

Are you sure about that?? I thought the tranny warranty was for all 00-01 Accords. Did honda change vendors for the 00 model that was causing the failures?
I thought that the I4 and V6 use the same tranny.

i4 and v6 do not use the same tranny.
There is no problem with the i4 tranny.
only the 00-01 V6 trannys have the extended warranty
and only 3% or so of v6 accords have tranny failures.
edit: im here conflicting info on the warranty... check with your dealer

Wrong on all accounts. i4 and V6 Accords use the same transmission, and both the i4 and V6 models were covered under the 00-01 transmision warranty as both were prone to premature failure as a result of bad carrier bearings. The failure rate was at 3% when Honda issued the warranty/recall, that was several years ago and the percentage has increased since that time and will continue to as the 6th gens age and mileage increases.
The problem may have been more widespread among the V6 models, I'll give you that... but the 4-cylinders were certainly affected as well.
