I dont think its bad for the tranny and even if it is, there nothing you can do when you are that hill. It rolls backwards cause the tranny cant push it on its own becuse of the slope so you have to accelerate a bit and give it more gas.

most honda engines don't develop thier torque until higher r.p.m.s, maybe that's some of it, or maybe the transmissions don't grab as well @ idle to save gas when sitting in traffic with the car in gear. just some ideas... anyone ever notice how when you put it in gear, it catches and then a split second later, you can feel it grab and start pulling harder... kinda like there's two processes of it going into gear?

well, if you have the car on a slight slant, it does stay still in gear but the engine doesnt have enuf power at idle for anything too steep.

Ohh..your poor clutch. I can see the pressure plates getting red hot and the friction plates smoking.

On an automatic... it will build up more heat by using the throttle to keep it from rolling backwards. It's will just wear out the fluid a little sooner if you do it frequently. The clutch in an automatic is the torque converter. It uses fluid resistance to transfer the power ratcher than direct contact with plates. Thsi is why the fuel economy is typically lower on an automatic for city driving. The power delivery is less effecient overall.
