They're trying to sell a guide, aren't they?

There's your answer on why they say that.

the autotensioner is the 5th gen lude (97-01) are known to fail I've seen them fail with only 50k on the clock and when it does the timing tends to jump and depending on how unlucky you are it can and has bent valves.

I have never seen one fail, if they are replaced at the time of a timing belt change or reoiled then you shouldn't have a problem. If you are running aftermarket cams with a large lift on them, I would then recommend that you convert to the H23 manual tensioner.

usally it's the 97-01 prelude thats had this problem with original one from the factory we replace them on all t-belt jobs on h22 theres a TSB on a flapping noise in the timing belt area ,it works by oil pressure as the seal goes bad and looses pressure and cannot be reoiled to prevent the failure ,I would recommend replaceing it when ever the timimg belt is done or convert to a manual .
