Default Cooling fan wont turn on while car is on...

95 accord lx, problem is, recently the cooling fan will not turn on while car is running, but after car is shut off, the fan turns on, but if u turn the car on again, the fan shuts right back off. I've looked around for people with similiar problems, and ive heard the culprit might be the cooling fan relay. If so how do u check the relay to make sure its still functional?, or is that even the problem? Any help would b appreciated, thanks

Relay could be a problem, easiest thing to do if you don't have a multimeter is to just swap relays and see if it's the problem. That's a really weird problem...you'd be well served to make sure all the wires are in good shape and the ground points aren't rusted out.

Yeah, could be relay, fuse, thermoswitch. Probably more likely the relay or thermoswitch.

Like said above, just swap the AC condensor fan relay into the radiator fan relay position and then see if it comes on. If it does, you know it's the relay.

You can remove and test the switch as well, or you can just pick up a new one.

So even after the car warms up, the fan doesn't come on?

Is the car overheating?

yeah the car warms up, and im in arizona, real hot, and the fan still doesnt turn on. so what im forced to do right now is run the ac, just so the fan comes on, and now when the ac is on, there is a wierd noise coming from the fan, and it gets louder the faster the car is going...its a real mess, but thanks for the advise....

Wait does the condenser fan come on or do both come on when you turn on the ac?

I'm in AZ too now actually, and my wife's civic was overheating so I had to do some troubleshooting as well.

So is the car actually overheating...as in the temp indicated on the guage goes up the hot rather than staying closer to the cool?

Try testing the fan with jumper wires from the battery. It should run smooth and fast. If there is a "weird noise" or if it is really rough or something, you might need to change the motor. If it runs smooth with power from the battery, then start looking elsewhere, like the relay, thermoswitch, etc.

At least jumper the fan motor and swap the relays and then tell us what happened.

What about the AC condensor...when you let the car idle with the AC on, does it fire up okay after a while?

Unplug the wires to the fan motor, and use two wires to provide power directly from the battery. I have some 14-16 guage wire laying around I use for stuff like that. If you reverse the positive and negative wires it'll just make the fan spin backwards, so make sure you test it both ways, but don't let the wires touch each other (use wire with only the ends stripped) or you can short it out.
