Engine Noise
I have a 94 Accord EX Auto 4cyl and for a couple years now it has been having a gradually increasing clank noise. In general it's pretty quiet but has been getting louder and at just a tiny tiny bit above idle it makes a clank noise. I beileve it's a valvetrain prob or adjustment but I'm not sure. Haven't adj. vales yet (prob should) HELP! The Car basically sounds like a diesel. Does anyone no anything about this noise?
I have been having a similar situation with my 94 Accord EX F22B1 Automatic with 174,000 miles. I noticed for example if I am accelerating at lower rpms that I hear a weird clunking sound. I can feel it slightly in the gas pedal sometimes. I notice it a lot when I am not going that fast like for example in a parking lot or turning corners. I also noticed it if I am driving at higher speeds and I let off the gas and the rpms go down then when I press the gas I hear the clunking sound then its gone once I get up to higher rpms. The sound is not there at normal acceleration. My engine is nice and queit at idle and also when I am driving on the freeway
So I am curious what this might be? Back in January I had the timing belt job done and I am not sure if I remember hearing it before I got the job done. I was wondering if it might have anything to do with the timing or balance shaft system? I know its not the CV Joints. The sound I hear is more of a "clunking sound" It's kinda weird. I know its not rod knock either. I've heard that before and rod knock is always there. The sound I hear is not always there. I also noticed when I put the car in neutral and rev the engine the clunking sound starts at about 1,500rpms and then goes away at about 2,000 rpms. The sound comes from the timing belt side of the engine. I am thinking it may be something with the timing belt. Ive had my valves adjusted and my engine is quieter but the sound is still there. Have you listened under the hood to find where the sound is coming from? Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

I've listened to about 5-6 other 5th gens and they all had the 'knock/rattle/diesel noise' between 1500-2k rpms. Mine is no exception. I started a similar thread a while back after a mechanic wanted me to believe I had a bad engine bearing. After hearing the other cars do it, and several owners of 5th gens on here reported having it too, I disregarded it as normal engine noise for the F22.
Yeah it's weird. I'm glad you posted this cuz I didn't know of any other Accord owners experiencing this until now. I am going to listen to other F22 5th gen Accords at a used car lot and see how they sound. I got that idea a lil while back. Have you found if yours is coming from a certain area of the engine? Mines sounds like it's coming from the timing belt area. I was thinking it might have something to do with the timing belt job becuase I noticed after I got it I also heard a squealing sound. I am going to have some mechanics take a look at it. They listened to it though and said they don't think it's rod knock either. They said it can be something in the timing system like the timing belt tensioner or other possibllities. I'll let you guys know what they say. ItsaHonda, do you feel it in the gas pedal sometimes? If anyone else has noticed this too write a post about it.
I don't feel it in the gas pedal, but I rev the engine manually via the throttle plate, I can feel it through the plate. When you check the other cars, lift the hoods and rev the engine up to 2k rpms real quick repeatedly... this is when you can really hear the knock come in. For me, it sounds like it's coming from behind/under the valve cover... but a noise like that is hard to pin point. I've noticed it since around 100,000 miles, but that isnt to say it's done it since I've owned the car. My engine now has 161,000 and still runs fine so it can't be anything serious. I forgot to mention that both the 92 Civic LX and 90 CRX that my friends own have it too, to a lesser extent.
Yeah that's what I noticed when I rev my car up. I've been noticing the sound for a few months now but I jus found out the other day that it makes the sound when I rev it up in neutral or in park. I did the samething you're saying I reved it up and there was the sound at 1,5000 to 2,000 rpms. I also noticed that sometimes it makes the sound at different rpm ranges while I'm driving like sometimes in the higher 2,000 range. How I'm accelerating effects it also. It's usually there with slower acceleration. Then goes away by 3,000rpms. Is it like this for you too or anyone else? Sometimes the sound is not there at all like when I'm accelerating faster. Its not there at idle or while im on the freeway. Yeah the sound does sound like its coming from under the valve cover in the head area. Yeah my car still runs great luckily
and it is well maintained. That's interesting to hear that other Hondas are doing it too. I plan on tryin to listen to other Accords probably next week. I'll let you guys know how they sound. I have heard some older Accords around here that make a high pitch squealing/humming sound which is kinda weird too. Thanks for the replies.
