Default Indicator Lights & Noise under hood

I have a 1998 Accord (V6-VTEC, EX), approx. 136,000 miles.

A couple of weeks ago, the BRAKE inidicator light came on. This usually means a bulb is out, so I checked, but all bulbs were working. A day or two later, the BRAKE light remained on and all of the door-open lights were on (i.e., the diagram of the car on the dashboard showed that all 4 doors & trunk were open, which they weren't). While sitting at a red light for a few minutes the following day, all lights suddenly went off.

Around that time, I noticed a 'whistling' sound coming from under the hood when i accelerate. It increases in pitch as I increase speed, and vice versa. Occasionally now, when I hit the accelerator and accelerate fast, one of the indicator lights on the dash, such as ABS, SRS, or BRAKE, will flash on and off once as the RPMs hit their max and then go back down.

Any advice on what this could possibly be? Thx.

have you checked your brake fluid? see if its low. I had low brake fluid once and the brake light would stay on and annoy me.

Alternator. The strange dash lights are a dead give away.

We really need to get together a maintenance FAQ for the 98-02 AV6, this question gets asked once a week.

You can change the alternator yourself fairly easily. The dealer will want $450 or so for it.
