Default gauge cluster

got a quote from the dealer of $1100 to replace my gauge cluster. i asked 'for that and what else.. are you serious?' the tach and speedo are jumping. they couldnt really 'confirm' that is the problem? for what they charged me to look into it, 2 days worth, id think theyd know how to test the gauges..they had to call a tech line..chaching for me.. where do you get this oem item new that isnt $800 for the part? i cant believe the gravy prices of some of this stuff. id be embarrassed to give someone this quote for a fluff part.. its not like its a critical part of the car. i dont want junk yard, used, or remanufactured.. they would be as old as the car and ready to bite the dust as well.. the dealer told me they dont see the gauge problem on the 90 thru 93 accords. their tech with 20 yrs experience working on this model and yr of accord said he has only replaced 1 head, so its very rare to see it go bad.. i have a 92 accord lx automatic..

I wouldn't have problem buying used, as long as there is a warranty.

hi, thanks guys..scanrps since u work at a dealer i have ?s for u on body repair and paint but that will be a later post.. i had originally changed the coil and the vss myself.. both gauges behaved about 1 week.. the transmission was replaced in jan, used thru a honda dealer only choices i had new $4500+ install or used $1300 installed not sure where it came from car was towed there.. any hoo the gauges behaved until may.. i changed the wires. plugs, cap and rotor, o2 sensor since i was there anyway the ignitor looked good. after $600 in parts and some tools i let the dealer have it. as stated above they couldnt find anything. they did say they checked the ground to the cluster not the plug and other sensors.. so im guessing the distributor innards where looked at.. i had looked at the ignitor and saw nothing.. it wasnt running very well and the car acted like it had a problem in the charging system. the starter was slow.. battery light flashes 3 or so times q morning. dealer said it was all minor..didnt say what they fixed. a valve adj helped some..was due.. but they spent 2 days looking for the gauge problem trying to get it to act up.. it finally did. they 'needed to find someone to test drive it'.. i told them no, just turn it on let it run, go eat or change some oil, read a mag, in about 10 mins or so itll start jumping. i had feared the distributor it was replaced in 01 with the tach jumping.. i have an aftermarket viper alarm and suspected a short or something. dealer found nothing so they guessed at the $1100. im a female so i guess we come across as easy pickins.. i will look at what u have posted thanks..
