Yup P1259 is a vtec code. Its either due to low oil pressure or low oil or a bad vtec pressure switch

well it did run kinda low, not dangerously though, several months back but was immediatly taken care of, i had just had it serviced like a week before the light came on, and now it smells like something is burning....what can i do to check on these things, my mechanic said something bout a carbon buildup....but from what ive seen on the forums and this post that doesnt seem it at all so im not too sure i trust my mechanic now..

Carbon? That doesn't seem anywhere right. I would check the oil and make sure its full. If thats fine the only othere thing that can cause that code to come on is if the Vtec solenoid isn't operating when the PCM tells it to. So theres either a problem with the input to the solenoid or a bad solenoid. Either cases a scanner would be the only way i know of monitoring that.

how much does it cost to change out a bad solenoid or a vtec pressure switch?

They're pretty easy to do yourself, at least on the J30A1.

Very easy on 4-cyl also.

The real trick is finding out whether the solenoid or switch is actually bad. The ECU can't tell the difference between a bad switch vs. a broken wire.
