Carbon? That doesn't seem anywhere right. I would check the oil and make sure its full. If thats fine the only othere thing that can cause that code to come on is if the Vtec solenoid isn't operating when the PCM tells it to. So theres either a problem with the input to the solenoid or a bad solenoid. Either cases a scanner would be the only way i know of monitoring that.
