Default Car wont start, please help!!!

Well I was coming home from a junkyard buying springs.... on the way home the brake light light came on telling me one was out ( not sure if this means anything but I figured I'd post it anyway). I went to start the car a few hours later and nothing. There is a cut off switch, so I removed it and wired to two wires togeter in case the switch went bad...nothing. I have to go back with someone to see if I get spark or not but I dont smell gas when I try to start it. Usually I would , right? Also I used to be able to put the car in neutral once the keys are in but now I have to stick a key in the release hole to move the gears around (96 lx auto). Had to do this to get to cut off switch in ashtray. Again not sure if it means anything but I want to post what ever I know. The car has almost 100k on it. I am hoping its just a fuse or something. What can I do to trouble shoot the car? How do I test to see if its getting fuel or not? Any suggestions on what may be wrong? Please help guys I am broke as hell and missing a day of work and paying for repairs is gonna screw up my already shitty ass holidays...

well....have you thoroughly checked to make sure the cut off switch isn't the problem?
ohh thanks for letting us know where your cut off switch is..

You shouldnt smell fuel when you start the car.

the shifter won't unlock because the brake switch pedal needs to be pressed and the switch must have 12volts going to it. if the brake switch was bad that wouldn't keep the car from starting. if it started before you left and now it won't after driving your alternator prolly died and killed the battery, thats why you have to power. if battery is good try cleaning battery cables and check all fuses. if nothing still, jiggle the battery cables around while someone else is trying to start it. if that works then you have a bad cable. if you get the car running again, pull the positive battery terminal off while its running,if the car stalls out,its the alternator thats bad. if the car cranks but don't start it could be a bunch of stuff so,i would start by checking for spark and fuel.

thanks bro, great reply. How about the fuel relay? Where is that? maybe its that fuse ( i hope ) The car seems to have juice to turn over. Is there an easy way to test to see if its getting fuel? In case the switch is good. BTW I am taking a bus back & forth from my job ( internet ) to my car.... fun sunday huh??

unscrew the fuel line from the fuel rail on top of the motor and turn the key on or crank the engine and see if fuel shoots out, keep a small rag or towel handy.

i've never had any problems with any relays but a friend had to replace a fuel pump relay in his 95 civic once and the mechanic told that sometimes they get stuck and you can bang on the dash to make it work until it gets stuck again. I would check to see if your getting fuel first,if not, then replace relay's or fuel pump, etc. if you pop up the lower section of the back seats and and remove the gas tank access cover you'll find, the pump and sending unit attached together. take the fuel pump and stick an ohm meter on it to find out if its working or not. or just turn the key on and listen to it.
