Also consider that that more people are now dirving large SUV's and Trucks than in the past. No ABS system will make a 5000lb car stop as quick as a 3300 lb midsized sedans. The poor handling characteristics of large SUV's also make them unable to avoid many accidents that a smaller vehicle can.

When you're about to hit a car head-on from behind in a car with ABS, you're just not always going to have the thought occur to your or have the time to check to see if the area around you is clear for you to swerve out of the way.
