Default SRS Light - Code 8-5. Internal Failure of SRS Control Unit

1997 Accord EX Wagon. SRS light came on and stayed on. The diagnosis is listed in the subject line. The estimate to replace the SRS unit is $652.30

Anyone know if there was a recall and/or if I can get the dealer to help on paying for/fixing this?

Ive heard something about resetting them, but I dont know how or if it will help that situation.

If it has to be replaced, try to find a used one.. on eBay or something.

That little SRS Control Unit is $652???
I'd just rather reach in the back of the instrument cluster, pull the bulb out, and take my chances.

I talked the Honda dealership into giving us some consideration. I did some research on the NTSA website and told them it looked like this part was about one phone call away from a recall.

They said that since I've bought 5 cars from them, they'd take care of us. Honda provided the part and we paid one hour labor at $68. Not bad considering the original $745 estimate.
