Default Car Is Sluggish, Need Help!

i have a 91 accord se automatic. the car had been sitting for a year before i got it so i gave it a tuneup and replaced the belts, etc. the problem i can't figure out is that the car is extremely sluggish in 1st and 2nd gear. i have to literally accelerate in D3 until the rpms are up to about 4000 and only then can i shift back into D4 to drive normally. also, the speedometer didn't work. as many of you suspect i thought the problem was the speed sensor so i bought one used and replaced it. although the newer speed sensor looked different it still fit (i bought it online). i get in the car and drive and although the speedometer now works the replacement has had no affect on the sluggishness in the acceleration. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?? i suspect that the tranny is trashed but like i said this is a 91 and if i have to replace the tranny i might as well toss the whole car. thanks in advance for any input...

It wont be that much to replace the tranny. I have a 92 Civic and its prolly gonna cost me 600 to replace the tranny and that includes the install.
