I usually just shift by sound and feel. I shift pretty quickly out of first, then from there I shift at 3000 when I'm in no hurry, and about 4500-5000 when I'm driving in a "spirited" manner. I almost never go over 5000 though; it's kind of my self-imposed limit. There was only one time that I wound out 1st and did the same with 2nd, and i was pretty impressed with how the engine came alive. I guess it gave the ivtec time to work it's magic.
I got 30 mpg over the weekend on a 320 mile trip, and about 75 of those miles were twisting smaller hwy. where I had to do some downshifting. The rest was interstate. The twisties were fun
(That made me want to get a stiffer suspension even more, to go with the stick shift)
