Default valve adjustment help please

Ok, I tried to do my valves yesterday, and messed something up. Now its noisy and check engine light came on. Will try to redo it tomorrow. Couple of questions: How do I know exactly that my First cylinder is in tdc? I think, I missed it yesterday, thats why I messed up. Is it have to be precisely in tdc? What if its quater-half inch off? Is rotating crancshaft pulley only way to turn cylinders? can I rotate cam gear?
THanks guys for any help.

Turning the crank pulley FORWARD ONLY is the safe way to turn the engine. If you turn the cam gear, or if you turn it backwards, you risk the timing belt jumping a tooth.

TDC for #1 is when the cam gear arrow points upwards, while the crank pulley timing mark lines up. When you're adjusting valves, all you're really worried about is that all 4 valves for that cylinder are closed.

#3 is when the arrow points forward, #4 downward, #2 backward.
