Is the fuel light supposed to turn on when the ignition is on but the motor is not started? I know most of the lights do this in order to check the bulb before statrting the vehicle. Does the fuel light come on when started or only when the fuel is low? Any help would be appreciated, before I break down the dash and check the bulb.

 

The low fuel light comes on only when the tank has about 2 gallons (or less) of fuel left in it. It doesn't matter whether the engine is running or not. Of course the key has to be in the run position.

Before you break down the dash make sure the problem isn't in the sending unit in the tank! It should be easy to troubleshoot.
