Default Mobil 1 5W30 to Castrol Syntec 5W40

Any problems with switching from Mobil 1 to Syntec.

I want to use a heavier weight oil because my 94 Accord Vtec engine is making a strange noise above idle to 2500 RPMs.
It has 112K miles on it.

thanks,

Michael

Default Castrol is "crap"?

Why is Castrol "crap"??

I used Mobil 1 5W30 in my car from new and now it may have
a main bearing problem! Only 112,000 miles on the '94 Accord EX
VTEC engine.

Flyromeo3,

No when I increase from idle to 1500 up to about 2500 RPMs when in PARK or NEUTRAL the engine makes a knocking or tapping sound.

..because if the syntec formula was sold by mobil it would not be called syn oil. you are overpaying for what you think is full syn oil. i guess it's not crap, it's good oil, but not for the $4 a qt your spending on it. i would try valvoline if you are unhappy with mobil 1.

there was a big lawsuit a few years ago that mobil put on castrol about it's claims of being full syn oil, you may be able to research it. mobil lost due to the fact there is no chemical definition of what is full syn oil.

Well since a Honda Accord (gen5) went a million miles on Syntec, it must not be too bad.

I was a diehard Valvoline guy, a buddy of mine worked as an engineer at cummins diesel. I asked him what oil was his preference, since they did some studies. He loved Amsoil the best, his next choice down the list was Syntec by Castrol with Valvoline and others down the list. (Since Amsoil isn't always at your local autoparts store I use Castrol, since you can find Syntec nearly anywhere.)

Do I have scientific data? No, do I care, No? I don't think any Synthetic Oil Full or partial will ever be bad for your car if you change it often. I have done tear downs on many regular or conventional oil engines compared to synthetics--I will never switch. It's not hugely important what brand of Synthetic you run, just know that using one is a huge improvement over conventional oil.

I don't care if an oil change cost me 20-bucks every 3-4months, it's way cheaper in the long run then the alternative.

how hard were you running the engine for those 112,000 miles. as MrChad said.. "It's not hugely important what brand of Synthetic you run, just know that using one is a huge improvement over conventional oil."

So switching to a synthetic at 122,000 isn't bad on gaskets and whatnot?

i don't think there's a problem with switching to synthetic.. it's when you switch to regular oil from synthetic that the seals leak
