alright, to get the knob off you have to pinch the rataining clips (inside the top of the boot) together and then the boot will slide down. Once the boot is slid down then you can unscrew the knob, replace it and put the boot back up. Pretty simple. I had the time of my life trying to figure this one out too.
ok guys, ive done what you said, and ive even confirmed it with a friend's haynes manual. No luck. I can't get the damn thing to move and ive pinched it on every combination of sides there is. This sucks.
just twist the son of a b*tch off, the boot or the chrome ring beneath it doesn't impede its ability to unscrew, did you try that? If worst comes to worst, take that center piece off, the black plastic ring that surrounds the shifter and goes up to surround the stereo. Open the armrest and pop out the small panel on the bottom, you should see 2 screws. Take those out. Grab that center console piece at the bottom in the rear and pull up and out. Once you get that out the way you should see either 1 or 2 screws on the face of the joint where the armrest console you just removed and the shifter console join together. Remove those/that screw(s), Pull the ash tray all the way out and you should see another screw in there, take that one out. Now grab the bottom of the black plastic piece that surrounds the shifter and pull towards the back, be careful, you don't want to pull too hard and break it. That whole piece should pop out and you can then undo the 4 screws that hold the boot onto that plastic piece and can now access the whole shifter lever knob assy without the boot limiting your access to the knob. See if you now can get the knob off. It sounds like alot of work but it should only take 5 minutes to get this stuff off. Hope it helps.

Damn, maybe I should have read the posts huh?
remove knob by turning.
