I understand Rick's point with how much horsepower a Civic has versus the Echo, but there's a few things he has to remember.
Honda Has:
1) More tuning potential in the engine (at least in this comparo, although the 7th gen. Civic with VTEC-E sucks...hard to tune. The last gen. Civic HX had VTEC-E as well).
2) Engine swaps
3) Aftermarket potential
1) With turbo, VTEC becomes a moot point anyways, as most people choose to run a non-turbo, because of lower compression
2) The 2ZZ-FE(Celica,MR2) bolts right into the Echo/xB/xA chassis
3) Greddy/TRUST, HKS, Power Enterprise, Blitz and a number of "JDM" companies make turbo kits and other parts for the 1NZ-FE and 2ZZ-FE
