Engine starts then dies

OK, after some more troubleshooting. I'm pretty sure it is the main relay now. Here are some things that we did too narrow it down to this.
1) every time we turned the key to the on position, sometimes the fuel pump will turn on and when it does, we can start it. When it doesn't, then we can't start it.
2) we took out the main relay to test it and it does the same exact thing. Sometimes when we power of the relay, we will hear it click and sometimes it won't
3) after doing some searches on here, I noticed one of the symptoms of a bad relay is that the car will not start in hot weather. We had a good two weeks of this type of whether and that's when we had the hardest time trying to start it.
do you guys think I'm right on this? I prefer not to have to spend $50 if I don't have to.
