Default Engine starts then dies

I need help figuring out what's wrong with my car. I haven't been able to use it for over a week now. At first, I couldn't get the car to start at all. It would still crank but never start. I already got new spark plugs and fuel pump installed and now have a different problem. If I leave it in neutral and start, I can start it but within a second, it will die. If I was to leave it in first-gear and start it, it will stay on. The only thing my brother can think of it is maybe the main relay, something with the fuel or the timing. What do you guys think could be causing the problem? I really need to take care of this. Thanks

First starts but neutral doesn't? Are you sure you didn't get it backwards?

in neutral, it starts but then dies within a second

leave it in first gear to start, then it stays on. once it's on, i can put it in neutral and it will stay on

would reseting the ecu do anything?

Ahhh, now we're getting somewhere. I was asking questions no a similar track, but again, I have to make things like one billion times more difficult.

(I was wondering if he did something with swapping the ecu,and was getting a weird problem with the auto lockup solenoid.)

My car is a 93 ex manual. The only modification is a cai but this problem has been starting before any modifications already.

Any CEL?
Also, check your spark plug wire order.
