Default Loss of power steering.. HELP!!!

the problem i have is that my power steering goes on and off, mostly off. I checked the fluid and its in between the lower and upper fill lines. when i turn the wheel, it will sometimes make a noise that comes from beneath the car (close to the axles). this problem just started today. do power steering pumps go out in one day?

i just looked at my car again.. when i turn the wheel, the noise is sort of a hissing sound. its coming from the firewall area, towards the middle. do you think i need a new pump? how much do they usually go for?

contaminants in the p/s fluid might have caused it...make sure you are using the correct fluid in there too. it's possible someone topped it off with the wrong fluid during a recent service...

obviously without seeing the car i can't diagnose anything...just makin a guess based on your description. i'm thinking it isn't the pimp, as the pump is not located in the center of the firewall, the rack is.
