Hi guys, its me again asking another question hehe ^_^. Anyway, this time its about the engines for Hondas. I want to swap my stock 93 engine (D15B7) with a much beefier engine. The only concern I really have is smoging it with california regulations, thats my only real problem. I was wondering about the JDMHondaParts H22A-R euro motor and the B18C-R integra engine. Anyway, if anyone could tell me abit about the two (mainly the 2nd one) Then it would be much appreciated, I just need to pretty much know if they will smog under CALI smog regulations. If anyone else lives in CA and could help me out with better understanding the smog regulations too, then that'd be a great help. Thanks again guys!

P.S. I probably wouldnt have been intelligent enough to ask this , except for the big bold letters near the JDMHondaParts.com website that says "JDM HONDA PARTS WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR UNSMOGGABLE ENGINES" So that sorta made me queezy =D

i've read in another forum where they called the smog referee. the referee told them that JDM motors can be smog legal.

I just heard back from my local California Smog Referee today! This is what he said:
JDM MOTORS CAN BE LEGAL AS LONG AS:

1. The engine is the same year as car or newer.


2. The ECU is a USDM and not JDM.

3. NO JDM wiring harness, it must be USDM.


4. The intake must be the original USDM air box, OR an intake that has a C.A.R.B sticker that is STRICTLY for the swapped motor. (Example: an AEM CAI for a GSR with a GSR motor will PASS, a AEM CAI for a Type R with a GSR motor will NOT pass)
I used an Injen intake, they listed it on my BAR sticker

5. The exhaust manifold MUST BE USDM, and if it is not O.E. then it must have a C.A.R.B sticker that matches the motor. I asked the ref. if they could really tell the difference between a stock USDM and JDM exhaust manifold, and he said that they have pictures for everything, and there are slight differences.
I used a DC 4-1 with carb #, also listed on my sticker

6. No adjustable FPR's, not unless it has a C.A.R.B. sticker. Does anyone know if the AEM FPR is C.A.R.B legal?
adj FPR are not CARB exempt

7. Must have a catalytic converter hooked up (this one is pretty obvious).

8. All USDM O.E. smog equipment MUST be hooked up and working properly!
including your check engine light, has to work properly

*YOU ONLY GET TO VISIT THE SMOG REF. TWO TIMES TO TRY AND HAVE THE SWAPPED MOTOR PASS; AFTER THE SECOND TIME, IF IT DOESN'T PASS, I GUESS YOU ARE SHIT OUT OF LUCK*

I've never known anyone that couldn't pass the second time, as they give you a list of what is holding you back

THE BIG QUESTION THAT I FORGOT TO ASK:

By getting the C.A.R.B sticker, will my insurance find out about the swapped motor?
I've had my motor in for about 2 years, insurance was not affected

Wow! Thanks thats a *HUGE* help! I am glad someone else is up during when im up hehe I was begining to think everyone was still asleep! Anyway, im off to go take my laptop to the printer in the other room=D Thank you *SO* Much, itll be a great rule of thumb for me. Thanks again!!
