Best method to remove paint off stock bumpers?
i just got me a set of eg6 front and rear bumpers, and they r black, and i want to strip the paint, shave the front license holes and what not. just wanted to know what would be the best way to remove the stock paint besides sanding.
I just repainted an OEM rear bumper 2 weeks ago...was white, painted it black... Im not aware of any way around sanding...all i did was light sanded it with 600 or 900 grit..(forget which one it was) and then clean it really well with some Laquer thinner, and it should be ready for paint...no primer needed... My bumper turned out great! It wasnt allot of work either, just scuff the old paint... remember not to touch it with your hands after its clean or you will get mad fisheyes from the oils in your skin...
Maybe somone else knowes a better way, but it worked for me...good luck!

My Tsunami T2000 came white ... :P Black car. No go. Well.. Money's been tight.. so.. to save the embaressement of having a two tone car.. I was forever looking for a urythane safe paint remover. I think it's easier to find the lost city of Atlantis. ANYway... Did what BoosTzex did... and just (temporarily) spraypainted it black. It looks quite good LOL.. well.. Better then white!
you actually dont need to strip the clear or the paint you just have to wetsand it smooth with some 500 and then finish it with 1500. and this is coming from an autobody person. make sure you keep wetting the sandpaper, cause if you let it dry and you keep sanding you will start to gouge the paint, keeping it wet keeps it smooth making a smoother cut into the paint. you can either use a water hose with a spray nozzle on low, or you can fill up a spray bottle with water and keep shooting the water under the sandpaper while you're sanding.
and also if you guys need paint to your own bumpers, go to your local sherwin williams auto paint stor they sell paint cans with the color of your choice for 20 bux about. can is about 8oz i think. at least your paint will match and if you know how to spray then it will come out cherry.
I had my buddy spray it with the proper colour match...He has a paint shop with a pro setup (bodyshop)...freebies are great, but it shouldnt cost much to have somone profesionally spray it if you do all the prep work yourself...If the bumper isnt damaged then there shouldnt really be any need to compleatly remove the old paint...
