What kind of coil overs did you get? I'm guessing most likely selvees.
KYB AGXs are adjustable but I've heard a few stories of them blowing when running slammed on coil overs.
Koni Yellows are the other choice but much more costly.
Personally I'd get full coil overs (Tein, H&R, JIC, I recommend JIC).
As for shocks snapping :wtf: never heard of it. I've been running Neuspeed Race springs (2.5" drop) on stock shocks for close to a year with no problems.
I'm switching to JICs because I hate bouncing around and I think they are just one of the best full coil voers out there, the FLT-A2 (JIC).
