On my weekend racer, I just took out THE ENTIRE AIRBAG system, so I can give you a good run down of what there is. On each side of the car, right where your feet go, there is an accelerometer unit that then connects to the brain below your heater core. That then sends the signal to the air bags to go off. The entire system is seperate from any other system on the car, other tha the fact that it is powered from the fuse box.

I hit a tree this winter while ****ing around in the snow, and hit it going about 10 mph or so. I ****ed up my bumper skin and cracked a light, and nothing else happened. 10mph is a pretty heafty hit with something as heavy as a car. Think about it. Most people can run about 10 mph. Run into a tree going 10mph and it hurts! being strapped into a car gives you a lot of padding.

I just have to ask, what are you doing hitting a garbage can doing 30 anyway? And how is that small of an object going to set off an accelerometer that is tucked behind the engine? Mass changes the rules in any collision.

just a thought on "controlling" the car after a crash. when the air bag goes off at 30, it blocks your view, burns your face, blows your arms away from the steering, but i highly doubt it that you could control a car after you hit something going over 30. the steering wheel would probably be very close to your gut and your arms would have most likely suffered some sort of sprain... this ain't bumper cars... and your bags aren't going to deploy if you're scraping the divider trying to control your car.. bottom line, if your air bags deploy, you would have been better with them in that situation. i mean think about it. if they were actually "bad" for you, cars wouldn't really come with them or they would have some serious recall or something.. comeon, if car manufactures kept on killing us with air bags in light crashes, there would be no one left to buy their cars. if you're looking at an example in f1 racing or whatever, yes they have no air bags but they're basically bolted to the seat and the cars are all built differently and the cockpit is virtually a metal shield. and well, those drivers aren't really controlling anything after they crash at 200 + mph

Keep your bags in your car man, it'll save your life for sure. They aren't as touchy as people believe them to be either, you have to drill someone pretty hard to get them to go off.
my friend in high school hit a poll and the airbag hit her in the face so hard she had multiple cuts and abrasions to her face

Airbag saved my life in a 1993 Subaru Impreza. I was driving my sisters old Impreza several years ago when I was struck by a Astro van that ran the red light. I was spun around and hit a cement wall when the air bag went off. Yes, the airbag gave me some minor burns on my face but I still have my teeth and had I not had the airbag I am certain I would have eaten the steering wheel. I would much rather have minor burns than be missing teeth or having abrken jaw. Ever had a broken jaw before? No fun at all. Keep your air bag retard.
