well, to answer what was probably the intent of the original question, without going into details, hows this:

Honda built its DOHC engines to make more power than its SOHC engines--thats pretty much it. They could have done a number of things differently, and theres nothing definitively or inherently superior about DOHC engines in general--just in the realm of hondas(as with many modern car manufacturers), DOHCs are more powerful.

ok, this is what i have read in to. (obviously DOHC has two cams and SOHC has one) The other differece is that in a SOHC motor has only v-tec intake lobe and there is not enough room for the v-tec exhaust lobe. The DOHC motor has a intake cam and a exhaust cam allowing for a v-tec lobe on both cams. ( plz correct me if im wrong)

So then if a 1.6 liter SOHC and DOHC have the same displacment, how is the DOHC making ~30 more HP?

Default What's up?

It is true that with a SOHC VTEC, you only have the VTEC affect on the intake side of the cam (there is only so much room on a camshaft for lobes) however, and I know I'm going to get crap for this one, so what. VTEC has much less of an effect on outgoing air than it does on incoming.

If your refering to a D16Z6 vs B16A, your comparing two entirely different engines. All B-series VTEC's have more aggressive cam shafts, higher compression and more aggressive fuel and timing maps to make that extra power. If you'd like, look up the hp rating of a DOHC ZC and SOHC ZC, I believe their both rated at 130hp. Seeya.

Sounds fair. Good answer.

So from honda's standpoint, why did they develop and produce a DOHC engine?
Is it SOLELY a marketing thing?

They're not any cheaper to produce, and they're heavier...

Just wondering.

Aren't Honda's V6's all SOHC (except the NSX)??? Does DOHC mean more torque?

Why does Honda use SOHC's in the V6's? Everyone else uses dual. Everyone else gets more torque with comparable dissplacement. Any relation?

because they make more than enough power..

its still a dual cam..just one cam per side...not connected.

intake manifold, more aggressive base maps, I think the C/R ratio is higher too.

if you race a non-turbo'd Bseries with a turbo'd Dseries of course the Dseries will win but race a turbo's Bseries...whole new world
