B16A for all around. Cheap, effective, bolt in, fun.

B18C for more power, yet more expensive

B18B is very cheap, and potential for FI later.

Keep it cheap and do a B18B. You can go FI or do an LS/VTEC.

If you want VTEC from the get go, get a B16A.

Expense mostly. A B18C1 is around $3500 to buy outright. You can usually find B18B's for around $2000-$2500. That's at least $1000 you put into a turbo setup.

Depending on your confidence level of working on your car and how much you want to spend, I would decide between a B18B, B18C1 and B20 custom setup. The B18B if you just want faster and your on a tight budget. It's a solid motor and the extra displacement/torque will make a big difference. Next would be the B18C1 if you've got a little extra money to throw around. It's got the same displacement as the B18B but with the VTEC, a lot more top end performance. If you feel comfortable doing a lot of work yourself, you could consider pieceing together a B20 setup. You'll need a B20 block, a B-series transmition (preferably one from a VTEC engine), axle's, mounts, ECU and a new intake manifold. You'll also probably need a clutch and flywheel among other small things (shift linkage, wiring harness and such). Probably not something I would recommend to someone for their first swap. Seeya.

It's really not so much a knowledge of working on engines, but working on Honda's. For example, a B20 project will really need to be parted together and if your comfortable changing a clutch, you won't really have much of a problem putting it together. The problem will be making sure you have all the right parts. You'll need all the big things and all the little things that usually are included in a full swap (shift linkage, axle's, mounts ...) that if you've never done a swap before, can be very easy to forget until you need them. Then your stuck with more downtime and cost while you hunt down and search for the correct parts.

What exactly do you want from your car is probably a better question. If your looking for pure 1/4 speed, the B18C1 will be faster out of the box and probably has the most potential. If your looking for a solid daily driver, the B20 would be good choice as the extra torque will be much more useful than the B18C1's top end and it will be little cheaper but a little slower than the B18C1. The B18B would also be a good choice and probably the cheapest overall. Seeya.
