Default tranny rebuild

there is oil leaking from the bell housing inpection plate on my 95 civic vx. i cant tell if its engine oil or tranny fluid. when i dropped the insp. plate there was sludge all on the tranny side of the housing but boone dry on the motor side so im pretty sure the the trannys main shaft bearing seal if leaking and not the engines rear main seal. my question does anyone have experience with this problem? im looking for a good diy so i can rebuild my tranny any replace the main seal and possibly the front main bearing or what ever else i find. should i try to replace the seal or jus get a new tranny?

It seems to be fairly common on d series transmissions. They really aren't that bad to work on. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time and space to work on it. Crack it open, inspect all the bearings, and replace the bad ones. Chances are if the input bearing is bad there are a few others that are less than stellar in there. You're also going to want a new clutch since the on in there is probably covered in oil. Just get a stock exedy clutch. You can get the tranny parts here http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com or here http://www.standardtransmission.com/

edit: just read your other post, sorry I didn't see it :hs: That definitely sounds like your input bearing. Mine made a grinding noise while taking off. Here's what it looked like

im planning on going with a zc turbo swap soon so i was kind of looking forward to keeping this long gear vx tranny, but from what u guys say its not even worth keeping it. i considering swapping with an ek ex tranny(s40 boo) but wouldnt those shorter gear ratios not work best on a turbo car?

short gears are better for drag racing, period. If it's not grinding while shifting then I'd just fix it. The input bearing and seal will only run you about $40. But if you're going to drag race you will probably want an ex/si (s20) tranny.

well it does grind into when i put in first some time so i think i might jus get an ex tranny. i thought that the s40 was a better tranny then the s20 jus because of the shift forks but ill take what ever i get a deal on
