Last night my car overheated and there was no water in the waterpump. I refilled it with water and pored some water in the radiator. The engine was off and cooling down for about 45 minutes then I drove home for 50 miles. It didn't overheat at all, in fact it kept it's normal temperature. .....But these morning when I turned it on and drove it for 5 miles the temp stayed the normal stage but the water pump was empty. It drank all the water. My question is why did my car use up all the water in the pump? Whats the problem, can anyone help?

I suppose you mean your overflow tank was empty.. Check the level in the radiator and also check to see if it is leaking. I would have a mechanic check it out.

Could be a leaking hose, bad water pump, blow head gasket, or hole in your radiator..

 

Yeah the container to the left next to the radiator. Its a white container. So its the overflow tank? If it is, then should it be empty?

 

Yes it is the overflow container and no it should not be empty. There is a full mark on the container. Like I said if you are repeatingly having to add antifreeze then get it checked out before you do any further damage.

 

I hadn't added any antifreeze, just water. Is that ok? So if I need to add antifreeze, where would I check that container. Where is located? Thanks for your help.

 

by saying container I meant your overflow reservoir. You are suppose to mix 50% antifreeze and 50% water. Serioously tho, stop by a auto garage and have them check it over.

Seeing as how you car isn't THAT old, I'd be willing to bet it's your thermostat. Also living in CA, you could (but shouldn't) run only water for a short amount of time.

 

DO NOT pay someone when you can diagnose this yourself!

Turn on car, and turn on heater.
Does it take forever for the heat to get warm?

 

No. The heat comes on quickly. What does that mean?
