2001 15,000 Honda Civic transmission Disaster!
Hi Guys this is my first time on the forum and a friend recommended that I post here. Our family has a 15,000 mile car that is a 2001 that supposedly has a ruined automatic transmission.
My 82 year old father bough a 2001 Honda civic new off the lot and changed the oil routinely. Its a grocery cart and drives only 5 miles back and forth to the store. Hence it only has 15,000 miles. Well we took it in for him to the city San Francisco to SF honda to get a 7 year 70,000 service which included a transition service where they added fluid and changed the break fluid. On the way home the check engine light went off. I drove it back and now am told that it needs either a torque converter or most likely a new transmission.
What is your take. What would you do. Supposedly Honda USA is owning up and making a "good faith" replacement but they will only pay 75% of the total cost.
If you were me what would you do. A car that is in good shape lives in a garage and only ventures out every other day for groceries shouldn't need a transmission. Should I fight to the death and demand a free repair especially since it was serviced and on the way home from the service shown to be in perfect condition?
Please help and I appreciate any response.

since he bought it new isnt it still under wararnty? if not, get the 75% off deal!!! damn.
how much are they wanting?
or you could find a used tranny and install it yourself? im not sure what the tourque converter is honestly, but flippin the tranny out and putting in a defferent/new one might take a bit of effort but its pretty strait forward(at least with a manual transmission).

200 to 1200 minus 75%? that would only be $50 to $300 right? not so bad... i might be doing the math wrong...
Sorry . . . the offer was they will pay 75% of the bill. RIght now replacing the torque converter is $1200 so were out of pocket $250. If the entire transmission needs replacing I suspect it will cost $3800. So we would have to pay about $1K.
My wife got all excited and threatened me if we didn't get the special service. Which I knew was bogus but hey its her dad's money.
So they changed the sparkplugs, fluids, and hoses/ Serviced the trans and the breaks. Cost $700.
That $700 service is now possiably a $1700 dollar service.
