Default starting problem..

A friend of mine has a starting issue thats throwing me for a loop.. its a 1998 civic HX sohc vtec turbo.. he pulled the motor out, changed the head gasket, timing belt, and clutch.. he put the motor in and when he trys to start it ih just starts and dies right out.. so he tried again and got it to idle by holding the gas pedal slightly jus to keep it idling but as soon as the pedal is let off the car dies.. but now the car will just crank, sta on for about 1 1/2 seconds and die right out.. timing belt is right on the money, theres fuel pressure and spark, sounds like the car wants to stay on but it just dies... n e one gotta clue on wat may be the problem... dont be scared to give me some help cause im stumped..
