Default About my valves.

Ok, I originally posted on HMT for some reason. I forgot they don't really offer you any help, they just say stupid shit to increase their post count on a dead forum. Anyway..

I get smoke out of my valve cover only after beating the shit out of my car. (oil thins and combustion gas escapes up and into my head) I get smoke out of my exhaust as well BUT thank god my rings are ok. I thought I blew my built motor but it just didn't add up, i didnt get constant smoke only after a good romping, no loss in power, no wet plugs. Turns out something in my valves is bad.

I was wondering what usually goes first valve guides or seals? Aren't the guides pressed in bronze or something like that? I was just gonna get an intake and exhaust valve seal kit for 40$. That should clear up my problem. I'm hoping it's not guides because then I'd need to pay for new headstuds, head gasket, machine work, guides, blah blah.

Any input would be great.

Also, when replacing the seats do you oil them up first or are they supposed to be dry and I read that you have to oil up the actual valve seal, will this comprimise the seal?

Sounds like you're not removing the head to replace the seals. Are you using compressed air to hold valves up or rope in the chamber? I used rope when I recently did mine and I installed the seals dry. I'm thinking I should have lubed them, but it's too late for me. I am curious as to how it supposed to be done.

Are you loosing any noticable amount of oil? I'm not sure if I would redo the seals unless you are. How much smoke out the exhaust is there? Is it when you're accelerating or deccelerating? Is it blue, black or white?

if it does it after a romping I would actually be more inclined to say guides. The seals don't expand and contract nearly enough to make them only leak on hard drives. They would have a constant blow by from my experience

for 40 bucks though I would try the seals first. Didn't you just build this motor? You didn't do all the guides/seals etc...or did you just build the bottom end and left the head alone?

oh and lube them.

The day I noticed it smoking I checked my oil and I was down a considerable amount. The smoke is kind of bad. Not volume amount, but it's a constant smoke all the time. I only get smoke out of the valve cover after a hard drive. And yeah I'm going to keep the head on and use my compression tester hose hooked up to my compressor to keep the valves up, but I'll probably also string them up like you did.

I get constant smoke from the exhaust, not a horrible amount, but it's constant. I think I get smoke from the VC after a romping because the oil has thinned significantly. But I dunno. Yeah I just did the bottom end because the motor has relatively low miles on it, but I never treat it nicely. A mistake on my part.

I guess I'll do some research on guides. If it comes down to having to have new guides pressed in I'm gonna just go all out with the head, might as well have a 3.5k rpm band instead of 2k.

Are you running a catch can? or are you venting to open atmosphere?

coz your oil is probably just blowing out of your crank case ventilation holes. If you have a catch can hooked up, you'll see how much oil has come out of your ventilation holes.

I'm thinkin your over reacting on this whole situation. Your compression numbers are fine. I went through a quart of oil at the track over the weekend, it blew out my crank case ventilation. Boosted hondas are known for haveing some blow-by.

My car smokes too, until it's warmed up and the pistons have expanded to their correct tolaranced. I usually start my car and let it warm up in the driveway until the coolant temp gauge is up to operating level, then after i get going down the street a mile later, it's all cleared up. It's the nature of the forged motor. Eric's does the same thing, as well as others that i've seen and built. I've got 2 motor motors almost ready to be dropped into vehicles in the next few weeks and they will do the same thing.

I'm venting it. I just got a filter on it.

Also I haven't driven the car since early May because someone shot my windshield with a BB gun. I think I told you. And I just haven't had the time or money to get a new one.

Maybe I'll just take it down the road and see what happens later today. I just haven't been able to start working on it till now.

Yeap! When you get the chance tony could you tell me a bit about the specs for the track? Cage requirements, helmets, tires, exhaust.

13's be careful
12's wear helmet
11's cage & harness (very lenient)
10's cage inspection (must have cage)

Harness's must be within 2 years old (they expire, as i've found out this year & had to replace)

Helmets are dated (must be within usable date range)
