okay so i went to work on this stupid cable this weekend. Had to tear off the front bumper. The cable itself was not broke, instead, right where the cable goes into the latch assembly, there is a plastic piece on the cable that is supposed to keep the cable in line. This is supposed to be located right on the outside edge of the latch assembly. Well, that piece was broke and was inside the latch assembly. I had to fish it out and rig it up to stay on the outside. It also didn't help that the release to my hood was jammed full of crap and had caused it to jam and not open. (This probably my main reason my hood wouldn't open.) I cleaned this up and oiled it, and now my hood opens fine. After about 1 and 15 minutes of frustrating work, I got this thing done.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Still an hour working on the car is better than giving money to the dealer.

thanks for the idea
my handle cracked off a few months ago and i have been dreading taking it to get fixed since you cant replace just the lever and have to rewire the entire cable
now i just need to find a decent handle to put on that fits nicely and looks stock
at least it still opens though, just need some pliers to get a grip
but soon it will be as good as new

I'm glad you got it fixed (also) and just FYI, if anyone has trouble with their hood not opening in the future, something that often works is to bang on the hood around the actual latch location(after you've pulled the lever inside car). I've had to do this on several cars, including my civic.

Either that or just keep it clean and oiled as SIcivic99 did and won't have a problem. edit: at least not with the latch jamming, that is.
