This time I just took some fine sand paper and put some swirl marks in the flywheel, even though it still looked fine. My old discs were wearing perfectly even so I just saved the expense of having the flywheel resurfaced.

But yes, the proper way to do it is to have the flywheel resurfaced.

What really sucks is that the new main seal started to leak soon after install- I knew I should have left the old one alone!! But it's been months and many miles, just sucks having to add a quart of oil every 200 miles (two days for me).
370,000 miles and the flywheel was "fine" sorry but im going to call BS on that one.

it may have looked ok to your eyes but i guarantee it needed a resurface at that point. thats way past the point where it will start seeing wear

It may be BS, but 40,000 miles later and it still shifts perfect.

If I decide to re-do the rear main seal which is leaking, I will snap a pic.

I'm not saying that's the thing to do, just that I didn't do it.

You're really gonna love this- the last 5 head gasket jobs I did, I didn't even bother to get the head resurfaced to professionally checked for warpage. All still going strong. Now that's stupid, but I'm cheap!

85 735 -six years ago due to overheating it.
my nephews Mitsu something-made it back to Alabama from Buffalo so he could trade it in.
88 735-this past xmas, due to external coolant leakage.
my kids 89 hatch-this first time because the timing belt broke (that's how I bought the car cheap, then this past xmas he blew the radiator and overheated it.

I too am guilty of doing headgaskets without having them checked for warp h: knock on wood they are all still going strong.

Another option for the flywheel is to get a new one. You can get them starting at about $40-50.
