Default Bouncing idle. help....

ok i have a 92 cx with stock motor with just aem intake and full cat-back exhaust... the problem is the car does not idle smoothly and the speedo does not work.. i got this car just recently and it did this already.. the guage cluster does not work except for the gas and temp gauges and signal also.. no tack in the dash and the car came with an aftermarket one that didnt work either. got it to work after searching few times on here.. so now the car starts up fine but after like 5 seconds the idle jumps to 1500 and back down.. i tried searching on here but no luck to the regular idle then the jump, blows a little smoke when idleing... and also the car stinks like gas and exhuast, any clues..thanks for any help...

If it happens on a cold start, it is the FITV (Fast Idle Thermal Valve)

If it happens after the car reaches operating temp, it is the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve).

It sounds like the FITV has backed out.

what did you do to stop the irratic idle?

as for the smell, do you have an exhaust leak?

well now i have another problem, i broke the timing belt trying to get the crank pulley off... the water pump was leaking and now i have to get a timing belt and cant see if the exhaust is leaking.. i think it was the charcoal canister also so i changed that out with one i had lying around.. well see what happens when i pick up another timing belt...
